There seem to be three drivers that caught the eye of the PGA professionals: the X2 Hot Drivers by Callaway, the TaylorMade Jetspeed TP driver and the BiO Cell driver by Cobra. All three companies have concentrated on improving the 440/460 cc club head with various options for shafts and grips. Rickie Fowler is now able to match the orange of his Oklahoma State clothing to the colour of his Cobra driver.

When reading the club specifications, you need to be an aerospace engineer to understand the terminology. Terms like “loft-sleeve technology” and “penetrating trajectories” can be very confusing. But in comparing the three drivers, the similarities are very striking if you keep it simple: adjustable heads with eight to 12 loft settings, which produce faster ball speed, less spin, lower ball flight and straighter and longer drives. The clubs are made of titanium, have a 10 per cent larger sweet spot and are more forgiving. All companies insist that it will be necessary to walk farther to reach your ball. The three clubs are each in the US $300 range.

TaylorMade Jetspeed TP This is the first driver with a Speed Pocket like that introduced in the Rocket Ballz and RBZ irons. This absorbs unwanted vibrations, with the face flexing to square the head. As a result, the club produces a lower spin rate, increased head speed and greater distance. There are 12 adjustable loft settings from 9.5 to 13 degrees. TaylorMade uses the expression 'full military power,' indicating the ball travels at jet speed. Cobra BiO Cell Cobra has taken the boldest approach, and even Tiger Woods puts either a driver or 3-metal in his bag.

The five colour options, especially the orange, have caught golfers’ attention. Cobra states its MyFly 8 with Smart Pad technology provides eight adjustable loft settings from 9 to 12 degrees. In addition, the new Crown Cell weighting and forged E9 face technology have reduced the weight of the club and produce lower spin rate, faster ball speed, lower ball flight and longer straighter drives. After spending time hitting all three clubs, Cobra won out for me. Regardless of your choice, each of the three clubs appears to be an upgrade from last year’s models.
