They offer several exciting new resources for students and teachers that will provide extra help when needed, regardless of the learning environment (classroom, lab, hybrid, online, etc)–new study skills activities in the text, an expanded video program available in MyMathLab and on the Video Resources on DVD, and more! The presentation of many topics has been thoroughly reviewed and tightened. When possible, more content is presented using bulleted lists and with the expanded usage of pointers in the examples to appeal to today’s visual learners. • A variety of exercises at the end of each section offers students many ways to practice and then master the material they have just learned. • Concept Check exercises facilitate students’ mathematical thinking and conceptual understanding in each section. • What Went Wrong? Exercises ask students to identify common errors in solutions and then work the problems correctly.
• Brain Busters challenge students to go beyond the section examples. • Relating Concepts tie the topics together and highlight the relationships among various concepts and skills.
• Technology Insights exercises illustrate the power of graphing calculators and provide an opportunity for students to interpret typical results seen on graphing calculator screens (Note: a graphing calculator is NOT required to complete these exercises). • Preview Exercises review previously-studied concepts and skills that are needed for the upcoming section. • Summary Exercises are carefully placed in every chapter to provide students with the all-important mixed review problems they need to master topics. Summaries of solution methods or additional examples are often included. The Lial Video Library, available in MyMathLab and on the Video Resources on DVD, provides students with a wealth of video resources to help them navigate the road to success! All video resources in the library offer optional English subtitles. The Lial Video Library includes the following resources: • Section Lecture Videos offer a new navigation menu that allows students to easily focus on the key examples and exercises that they need to review in each section.
These lectures also include optional Spanish subtitles. • Solutions Clips show an instructor working through the complete solutions to selected exercises from the text.
Exercises with a solution clip are marked in the text and e-book with a DVD icon. • Quick Review lectures provide a short summary lecture of each key concept from the Quick Reviews at the end of each chapter in the text. • The Chapter Test Prep Videos show step-by-step solutions to all exercises from the Chapter Tests.
These videos provide guidance and support when students need it the most: the night before an exam. The Chapter Test Prep Videos are also available on YouTube (searchable using author name and book title). Study Skills Activities have been integrated throughout the text.
These short activities provide helpful information, tips, and strategies on a variety of essential skills. • Lial’s student-friendly examples keep students engaged in the learning process. • Now Try exercises are now included as a parallel margin exercise for each numbered example. These all-new exercises immediately apply and reinforce the concepts and skills presented in corresponding examples. • Pointers from the authors provide on-the-spot reminders and warnings about common pitfalls. • The chapter summary material offers ample opportunity for review. At the end of every chapter, students will find the following resources.
• Key Terms and Symbols are keyed back to the appropriate section for easy reference and study. • Test Your Word Power exercises help students understand and master mathematical vocabulary. • Quick Review sections list not only the main concepts from the chapter (referenced back to the appropriate section), but also give an example of each concept.
• Review Exercises are keyed to the appropriate sections so that students can refer to examples of that type of problem if they need help. • Mixed Review Exercises require students to solve problems without the help of section references.
• Chapter Tests help students practice for the real thing. • Cumulative Review Exercises gather various types of exercises from preceding chapters to help students retain what they are learning throughout the course. • The Lial MyMathLab course offers interactive versions of the Key Terms and Test Your Word Power from each chapter. Students can also watch summary lectures for each concept from the Quick Review. The Chapter Test Prep Videos show an instructor working through the complete solution for every exercise from the chapter tests. MyWorkBook provides extra practice exercises for every chapter of the text.
MyWorkbook can be packaged with the textbook or with the MyMathLab access kit and includes the following resources for every section: • Key vocabulary terms, and vocabulary practice problems • Guided Examples with stepped-out solutions and similar Practice Exercises, keyed to the text by Learning Objective • References to textbook Examples and Section Lecture Videos for additional help • Additional Exercises with ample space for students to show their work, keyed to the text by Learning Objective. Table of Contents Note: each chapter concludes with a Chapter Summary, Chapter Review Exercises, Chapter Test, and after Chapter 1, a set of Cumulative Review Exercises. About the Author(s) Marge Lial was always interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself has inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, is affiliated with American River College. Marge is an avid reader and traveler. Her travel experiences often find their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets.
She is particularly interested in archeology. Trips to various digs and ruin sites have produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan. When John Hornsby enrolled as an undergraduate at Louisiana State University, he was uncertain whether he wanted to study mathematics education or journalism. His ultimate decision was to become a teacher, but after twenty-five years of teaching at the high school and university levels and fifteen years of writing mathematics textbooks, both of his goals have been realized. His love for both teaching and for mathematics is evident in his passion for working with students and fellow teachers as well.
His specific professional interests are recreational mathematics, mathematics history, and incorporating graphing calculators into the curriculum. John's personal life is busy as he devotes time to his family (wife Gwen, and sons Chris, Jack, and Josh), and has been an avid baseball fan all of his life. John's other hobbies include numismatics (the study of coins) and record collecting. He loves the music of the 1960s and has an extensive collection of the recorded works of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. A native Midwesterner, Terry McGinnis received her Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education with a concentration in Mathematics from Iowa State University. She has taught elementary and middle school mathematics, and developed and implemented the curriculum used with her students.
Terry has been involved in college mathematics publishing for over 20 years, working with a variety of authors on textbooks in both developmental mathematics and precalculus. After working behind the scenes on many of the Lial/Hornsby textbooks and supplements for over 10 years, Terry joined Margaret Lial and John Hornsby in 2002 as coauthor of their developmental mathematics series that includes Introductory Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and Introductory and Intermediate Algebra. When not working, Terry enjoys spinning at a local health club, walking, and reading fiction. She is the devoted mother of two sons, Andrew and Tyler.
