I've been playing for over 40 years and this is amp #4 in my current stable (others: Ampeg SVP-Pro/Crown, GK MB115 combo, MusicMan tube head), but it is now #1 when I am going out the door.

The spectrum of tone, and I mean powerful tone, is fantastic. Deep, crisp, fast, punch, smooth, it will do it all. Contrary to what some have said, it is very easy to dial in: just set the EQ flat, balance the gain and master to the volume and grit that you desire, rotate the contour to get you in the ballpark, test the two contour centers to see which 'center' is preferred. And then tweak the EQ stack (GK is the BEST in this area) to get you that little bit closer to what's in your head, and then maybe readjust the gain/master if necessary. The range of tones is stunning.

The response is extremely lively & fast. As crisp & clean as you like, and that thick, gooey, SVT caramel is there, too. This amp can substitute for nearly every great amp there is. The weight is of no consequence when compared to the truly heavy metal that populates the realm where this baby lives. In that sense it is quite light in the upper 20's (lbs.). The front end has incredible headroom and takes pedals well. This doesn't sound like a classic GK because of the beautiful tubes.

The motor drives are flawless. I have used it with 2 bands steadily for a month and I am extremely pleased, as are ALL who hear it. If you like a lot of different amps and can't decide which one to live with, you've got to check the 550 out.

I am currently running it into a GK Neo 212-II or an Aguilar GS stack (210, 115). Both sound AMAZING at any volume. I house it in a SKB 3-space Shallow Roto Rack and it is a perfect fit. Just about the best amp I ever experienced; a very happy owner.

BTW: its got more grunt than my SVP-Pro/Crown rack that easily generates over 1.5KW. But that's a class D Crown power-amp.

I actually considered getting rid of it because it's overkill for me to carry and it's way overkill for the application. It's a little heavy in the road case with my other stuff, but it's worth it when I hear it. I did get the opportunity to play it at a music festival however last year and was able to crank this to 12 o clock.
